Current Project Funding and Schedule
How much will Bridging I-5 cost to build?
For the alternatives now being evaluated, planning-level estimates range from $250 million to $400 million. Costs will vary based on the size and complexity of the alternative selected. These estimates will be refined during the detailed planning the City is now undertaking.
How is the project being funded?
Most of the funding for the current planning of Bridging I-5 comes from federal transportation appropriations (secured by former Congressman Robert Matsui and current Congresswoman Doris Matsui) and the Federal Highway Administration’s National Corridor Planning and Development Program. About $5 million comes from these federal sources, while $1 million comes from local funding and an additional $300,000 from a Caltrans community-planning grant. Future financing for design and construction will be procured once the planning phase has produced a viable decking alternative. These monies are likely to come from a variety of public and private funding sources.
How long will it take to plan, design, and build Bridging I-5?
The Bridging I-5 planning, engineering, and environmental process is expected to be complete by 2010 (see “Anticipated Milestones” at right). Once a recommended project has been selected and funding identified, the City will attempt to procure funding to move forward with design and construction. The timeline for this is highly variable but will become clearer as the planning process proceeds. Please check back periodically for more details on schedule and key milestones.
